From high in the Nyika Plateau in the north of Malawi, Africa, rises the headwaters of the Rukuru River, one of hundreds that flow down the western flanks of the Great Rift Valley into Lake Malawi. During annual rains the river's level rises significantly, marked by bands along the giant granite boulders lining the river banks.
