Sports are very popular among children who live in the Amazon. Soccer is the most widely played sport, as it is the national sport of most Latin American countries, and invariably called "futbol" (= football). Brazil's soccer team has won the World Cup more times than any other team and national players are worshipped as heros. It's not often played by girls who generally prefer volleyball. Other popular U.S. sports such as American football and baseball have not caught on although basketball is making some inroads.
This photo was taken (in San Pablo, near Iquitos). The young lads are happy to play whatever the field conditions!
Here the boys must tackle the mud as well as each other. Guess how far the ball will roll when it is kicked.
