BREADFRUIT

return to gallery

Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) is not a native Amazon species—it was originally introduced from Tahiti (via England and Captain Bligh of "Mutiny on the Bounty" fame). In the picture, the round greenish fruits look fuzzy but they're actually covered with tiny spines. Natives do not favor the food but rely on it when other crops fail.
