It's warm in the Amazon! And the local people need to stay cool. In the absence of air-conditioning (or
electricity for that matter!) the Indians turn to what's at hand. Hence they make fans.
These are made from stiff grasses, with palm fiber tied around the handle. Like basketry, this craft goes
back to the dawn of humanity, yet is being lost as the native peoples are assimilated into the local
culture. Yet as long as tourists will pay for these handicrafts, the skills to make them will persist.
