Satellite images of fires give details of topography and a broader perspective impossible from ground-based observation. Practical applications include maps of particulate matter, air quality, and climate. Fire managers can make better decisions through the use of new imaging and reconnaissance techniques. Forest fires destroy resources and often threaten urban areas. Thermal infrared wavelengths can penetrate smoke and show fires or areas of higher temperatures. Scientists are use these images to monitor clearing of forests by slash-and-burn agriculture. Evidence from thermal images helps governments to manage forest resources and to develop alternatives to destructive agriculture methods. Satellite images of fires are used to compile maps that can be used to compare areas or time periods (see Fire Maps).
