So began what used to be the longest non-stop commercial jet flight in the world, from Miami to Cape Town, South Africa (introduced 12 December 1992, discontinued 2001). The Boeing 747 jumbo takes off early evening, and flies overnight to Cape Town, 12 hours non-stop. Soon after, the plane takes off again to complete its journey in Johannesburg. To get to Malawi, or other country in southern Africa, most passengers stay in an hotel in Joburg (as it is called) and then take a short inland flight (see next photo) to their final destination.
