The Amazon's vast region of rivers and swamps are a haven for water birds such as this Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias), a species common in North America. Herons are predators of fish, frogs, baby caimans and small turtles. (Note for bird-watchers: The very similar-looking cocoi heron has an all-white neck.)
