The Amazon is big! It's three-quarters the size of the United States, and covers nine countries in all. To understand it as a whole, scientists use satellite images of the entire region. This enables them to look at things like primary production (what's this?), vegetation cover and broad weather effects. The Amazon basin is so huge that it creates its own weather, which can be seen as pulsing of cloud cover over time.
