IQUITOS FLOATING CITY

return to gallery

The Floating City is the poorest part of Iquitos (Peru), comprised of thousands of floating houses, most of which lack electricity and running water. This is the biggest slum for a thousand miles (note the vulture in flight). People come here from the forest looking for work. The main part of the city is above the high water mark, whereas this district is on the river and moves up and down as the river level changes. Concrete steps take you down from the main market down to the Floating City, also called Belen.
