Locusts belong to the order of insects Orthoptera, which includes locusts, katydids and grasshoppers. Twenty-one species of this group are known from the Galapagos. The painted locust (Schistocerca melanocera) shown here is the most often seen, on account of its large size and bright colors. It is common throughout the lowland areas of most islands.
