In the absence of a social security or welfare system, Kenyans who fall on hard times must find creative ways of making a living. In rural areas the traditional extended family might find work for a blind relative, but in cities such as Nairobi, Kenya, where this photo was taken, the blind must fend for themselves. Here four of them play as a street band and beg for money from their sidewalk venue. Note one of the instruments is an empty soda bottle. The small speaker amplifies the band on a busy city street.
