Although 3,000 to 8,000 feet in elevation much of the habitat covering the Nyika highlands is typical savanna. Tall grasses, yellowed from lack of rain provide forage for large herds of herbivores. Tall flat-topped acacia trees provide welcome shade, or perches for leopards and raptors to survey the landscape for suitable prey. (Read more about savanna natural history.)
