Most of the Amazon's people live in rural areas, in the forest, along rivers, in remote villages far from big cities. This is changing. As the population grows, so people are moving into towns and cities, bringing along with them the problems associated with uncontrolled urbanization: poverty, crime, disease and drugs. Pollution and loss of habitat for housing and industry are major impacts on the environment. Many people are working hard to minimize the damage caused by growing urban areas, but the pull of the city life is irresistible.
